NEW TARRANT JUDGE HOPES TO HELP GRIDLOCK
Full Description:
As he is taking office, newly elected Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley plans to push for tax reform and more mass transit. North Tarrant County is of particular concern.
Growth throughout the area along I-35, between Loop 820 and downtown Fort Worth, has produced massive amounts of gridlock. "The projection is, if we don't do something now, we're going to be looking at gridlock in 15 to 20 years," warned Whitley.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) hopes to triple the number of lanes, with some being free and others being tolled. Whitley wants the county to maintain the free lanes. "Basically, as many free lanes as there are now, there will never be any fewer than that," Whitley said.
Commissioners acknowledge that they can't ever build enough highways. "Light rail has to be a component of any solution," Commissioner Roy Brooks said.
Local leaders, he says, should control caps on climbing property tax values and how we build our highways.
To push for local control of issues like tax reform and transportation, Judge Whitley will need cooperation throughout the region. He has taken lessons from his predessor, Tom Vandergriff, on building what Vandergriff called 'regional cooperation.' "I realize there was a time when we called each other names, Tarrant and Dallas Counties, but all that's behind us," Vandergriff said as he attended swearing-in ceremonies on Monday for Judge Whitley. "Together, we can move mountains."
