VANDERGRIFF SET TO RETIRE AS TARRANT COUNTY JUDGE
Full Description:
At the close of the year, Tarrant County Judge Tom Vandergriff will be retiring after spending 56 years in public office.
On Thursday, Vandergriff attended his last commissioner's court meeting. It marked the end of a long and prosperous career.
"I'd just like to say thank you for the 15 years you've served on this court," said Precinct #4 Commissioner J.D. Johnson at the court meeting. 'It's been a pleasure to serve with you. We're going to miss you, Judge."
"I am excited that the public has been willing to allow me that opportunity to serve over such a long span of time," said Vandergriff. "It's been a great experience. It truly has."
His career has been marked with many great milestones.
His statue stands at Ameriquest Field in Arlington. He served as the Arlington mayor for 26 years, and made the pitch that brought GM to the city. "I'll have to plead guilty to convincing General Motors that if they located in Dallas they'd make Fort Worth mad, and if they located to Fort Worth they'd make Dallas mad. Locate between and everybody will be happy."
Vandergriff also represented Texas as a U.S. Congressman. He was involved in major endeavors benefitting North Texas, including the construction of DFW Airport.
With all of those accomplishments behind him, Vandergriff jokes about his future, spending time at home. "I'm concerned," he said. "I've never been around my wife all that much. This can be rather awkward. She's a strong-willed person. I'm definitely not the head of the household, but I'm looking forward to relaxing."
Vandergriff will swear in his successor, Commissioner Glen Whitley, on January 1.
